-species description-
Moonlight dragons have always been a mystery to humans who have never met them. Not even the dragons themselves know all of their powers, and the powers vary from dragon to dragon. Moonlight dragons are a very rare species that often have other types of dragon in them due to the fact that they can never seem to find another of their kind. There are a few, though, that are born by the hand of the essence of the moon. They are pure and are placed in random caves. The caves always have blue crystal in them, and the eggs are almost always shrouded by illusions. They will only hatch when another moonlight dragon finds them or they are touched by the petal of a lunar flower.

Moonlight dragons have a wide variation of powers. They have three different forms; usually a human form and an animal form, the animal form commonly being the closest relative of the moonlight dragon: the wolf. Moonlight dragons are proficient in the art of searching minds and speaking to others with their own minds. These dragons can store the light of the moon in reserves in an unspecified part of their body, and use it to fly and heal. They can summon two spirits: a male and a female, of a type of animal. Common spirit animals are usually deer, elk, owls, tigers, and on occasion they can be granted with two raptors of some sort from prehistoric times. The spirits protect moonlight dragons, for they know that the moonlight dragon is what allows them to leave and return to this world. Most of the time a strong bond is formed between dragon and spirits.

Moonlight dragons have many defense mechanisms. Under their skin they have a very, very thin layer of cartilage that, when powered by moonlight, expands and compresses until it forms a diamond-hard layer of protection. Their soft neck and tail fur can turn to spikes as hard as steel, and their blunt horns can tip to razor edges. Their species still survives only because of these defenses. Moonlight dragons have a few offensive techniques, though they are usually peaceful. They can shoot balls of aura that can slice the opponent with tiny, millimeter-sized shards that also explode on impact.. They do not kill much, though, and when they do they either do it with much pain or they kill things that aren't very intelligent, for they can hear the last thoughts of the victim unless they kill the victim before they even know they are there.

Moonlight dragons grow rapidly in their first eight years of life, growing up to thirty to forty feet (when standing on their hind legs, measured to the shoulder) by the age of ten. Their growth slows slightly. By the age of twelve years the average height to the shoulder (when standing on their hind legs) is about thirty- to forty-five feet. After their twelfth year they grow at about half a foot a year unless constant exposure to harsh conditions or something else forces their body to grow to adapt to their environment.

Moonlight dragons are a very female-oriented species, the female : male ratio being at about 2 : 1. In the extremely rare, almost impossible case that the dragons group males will often take two or three female mates, though grudgingly. Moonlight dragons will usually refuse to mate unless they completely trust the other dragon completely. They usually have to feel something towards the other dragon before they will even consider it. But if their species is at stake, they will mate grudgingly. Moonlight dragons usually hold eggs for about two months. The eggs, after laid are huge-- usually about two feet tall and ten inches in diameter. Their shells are light blue and show no veins. When held up to moonlight and moonlight only, you can see the embryo, but the shell of the egg is almost impenetrable for the three months; up until about an hour of hatching. This window is the only time when the shell softens enough for the hatchling to break through with its horns, which are sharp upon development but recede after a day or so.
